In this post I'm going to rush unnecessarily to do an ill-informed first episode impression of the earliest possible thing to air this season, and since Heroman actually looks like it's good I'll go for Ikkitousen: something where everybody involved knows what they're getting.
Ikkitousen is kind of weak, I think we all know this. C-list shonen-style action, low production values, but they try to make up for it with tits and ass. It works well enough, in that they sell a shit-ton of PVC figures that justify the series' continuation under the direction of the "legendary" Koichi Ohata.
This is the fourth season of a fight anime, so it's correctly assumed that the average viewer doesn't know what the hell is going on. To this end, our man Ohata-- who's used to cutting corners, as seen in hits like MD Geist II: Death Force-- packs a stunning six-minute recap onto the front of the show. They probably should have gone with an entire episode to recap, but instead they opted even to half-ass the half-ass activity of the anime recap episode. This amount of material is clearly too much to cram into six minutes, and they lost me after "blonde girl has to conquer high schools by beating people up". There were CG dragons, though!
In summary, a girl who stuffs her bra hits people for 20 minutes until she gets stuck ass-first in a water tower and is shot out of it like a cannonball. This actually sounds kind of awesome, but it's not: this is in large part because the production values are so low.
Remember what I said about cutting corners? Well, all anybody does in this show is fight, and fighting is difficult and costly to animate, so obviously that's where they're cutting corners. Every trick possible is used to save some cash and avoid the very hard work of actually animating people fighting. Motion is usually implied, not shown, by having Girl A about to swing at Girl B, and then cutting to Girl B's reaction to the attack, for example. In one scene (at about 18:20 for those of you at home keeping track) a kick appears to have been animated, but isn't really. I'm no Anipages Daily, but this sequence is really interesting to me, so I'm going to show you some of the frames.
Falling from the roof of the school after getting her ass home-run blasted by a water tower, our bra-stuffing heroine is hoisted by the huge volleyball girl. There's only one way to save her!
There are a couple of frames where she raises her legs for the kick, and the last frame here, as you can see, blurs out. After this the screen goes white for a frame and...
KIIIIICK! And the very next frame...
Might I add that this is the scene with the greatest feeling of impact in the episode: usually actions like this are just cut away from entirely or done in single frames. If you want martial arts anime you have a lot of better choices-- might I recommend Air Master?-- and if you want tits and ass anime that's never in short supply. If you gotta, gotta have both, though... the Tenjho Tenge anime sucks too. Looks like you're stuck with Ohata. Stay dangerous!
